In January, Lattis was invited to accompany Tim Sergie, one of the Native
Leaders in Alaska, to Togiak. Togiak is a village on the Southwest coast of
Alaska about 400 miles southwest of Anchorage. It is only accessible by air or
sea (in the winter you can reach it by snowmachine if you are brave enough and
don't mind getting a little cold). The population of Togiak is predominately
Yupik. Yupik is spoken fluently by most of the older population of the village
and is being taught to the younger population. Much of the church service is in
Yupik.
While in Togiak, the windchill reached around 40 to 50 below zero, but the
people were warm in their reception of the concepts of Local Church Leadership
Development. The church is strong in spite of not having a credentialed pastor.
Part of the purpose of the visit was to identify and help develop local
leadership for the church in Togiak and across Western Alaska.
